Once we start with a weight loss plan, if all goes right, our bathroom scale is be our best friend and the source of boundless happiness. It can also be our merciless enemy if we have been naughty with our habits and it is not showing the results we want it to show.
Sometimes though, even though we are following our programme and doing everything right, the scale just stops moving or (gasp!) even shows that we have gained weight. What is going on here?
The first thing to understand is that our weight can fluctuate wildly during the day – just try weighing yourself in the morning and in the evening (or vice versa). I myself see changes of around 3 – 4lb, depending on how the day was. For some people, these differences can be even greater. The food that you take in, no mvatter if it has a lot of calories or not, has a certain weight to it. If you drank a lot of water, this will also contribute to you what you see on the scale.
It is a good idea to always weigh yourself in the morning, before you have anything to eat or drink. In this way, you will get the most realistic picture of how you are progressing. Keep in mind though that even this weight depends to a certain extent on what you did the previous day, so you might not see the same progress that you expect every morning.
The bottom line is that you should pick a programme that you feel works for you and stick with it. There will be days when you will see quick results, and there will be periods of plateaus. As the saying goes, weight loss is not a sprint, it’s a marathon, and the results are inevitable in the end.
