The Importance of Exercise

22-Sep-2016

Most experts agree on one fact - abs are made in the kitchen, not in the gym. While this may sound like an oversimplification, it is by and large true. There is no exercise program in the world that will be able to negate the effects of a bad diet, no matter how much you sweat in the gym. Just think about it this way: A Snickers (or similar) bar has around 250kCal, which is roughly equal to the amount of calories you expend during 30m of aerobics or jogging. Unfortunately, all of us who have struggled with weight issues know how easy it is to gobble down a chocolate bar (or three, or five), some juice, then a few cookies, and why not some pizza.... Yeah, you get the point.

This is far from saying that exercise will not help. Physical activity is very important if you want to lose weight and achieve your target weight.

The number one benefit of regular exercise is that it will help you to burn calories. If we continue with the example from above, 1 hour of jogging or similar physical activity can burn off around 500 calories. That is already a good deficit in your daily calorie count. If you combine regular exercise with great nutrition, such as the Herbalife Formula 1 shake, you will noticeably increase the rate at which you are losing your excess weight. And there is more - exercise will help you build strong, healthy muscles. Muscles are important because they help you burn fat faster, and give you that lean look that you are going for. Herbalife has great products that can help you gain the most out of every exercise session and you can take a look at our sports products on this page.

Psychologically, exercising releases dopamine which will improve your mood, your self image and motivate you to continue with your fight against unwanted kilograms. After you spend an hour working in the gym, you will definitely feel bad to waste all that effort and eat a big unhealthy meal at home.

If you feel yourself to be quite out of shape (as many of us do), there is no reason to worry. You don't have to be a triathlete in a month - you just need to get moving. As with anything, start with baby steps. There are plenty of ways to increase the amount of exercise or physical activity you get in a day - and you don't even need to hit the gym to get all the amazing benefits. Here are a few very simple examples, but you can definitely find many more:

1) Instead of taking the elevator, start using the stairs

2) If you are going somewhere close by, avoid using the bus or the car, and instead cycle or walk

3) If you are using the bus, get off 1-2 stops before your destination, and walk the rest of the way.

4) Instead of spending the evening on your couch watching TV, take a walk around the neighborhood. Not only will you burn calories, but you will also feel much more relaxed and energized.

5) Plan a fun activity for the weekend that includes some kind of physical exertion. If you are like sports, join or organize a pickup game of basketball. Otherwise, take a walk around your city or go hiking somewhere nearby. Losing weight can be a side effect of leading an active and enjoyable life.

Try to include some kind of physical activity into your daily routine, no matter how short it may be. You will notice a big difference very soon - both in terms of the way you look, and perhaps more importantly in the way you feel. Our lifestyles have us at our desks for most of the day, and we often find ourselves switching the chair at work for the chair at home. Once we start living more physically active lives, we will no longer only look better, but feel better as well.
